Alternative Uses of Climbing Gear Aleana needed to move out of her South End apartment. I volunteered to help out. It turns out the stairway is barely big enough to carry a backpack up, let alone several pieces of furniture. A solution was needed so I decided to lower the furniture down three stories out her window (the way it came in) to the ground using appropriate climbing techniques. It actually worked really well. We lowered down a dresser, a box spring, a mattress, a sofa and its matching loveseat. Nothing broke or fell, although the mattress got hung up on someone's window AC for a little while. I was anchored to a post in the "living room", the furniture was attached to a butterfly knot in the rope, and the end of the rope went down to Aleana so she could theoretically keep the furniture away from the building. Here are some pictures: Me tied in. A view from the window sill down. Dresser ready for descent. Dresser and the window behind. Boxspring belayed. Mattress belayed and nearly caught on AC. Aleana readying the couch. Couch belayed. Couch safely on the ground. Loveseat belayed. Loveseat safely on the ground. |
