Heavily modified CJ-5
Well, this has a long sordid history. I'll give a brief overview here and then get detailed when I take some more pics.
It was originally a 1965 Jeep-Kaiser CJ5. "Originally" was when I was 16 and my dad gave it to me for my birthday. Over the early years I
did some minor modifications (suspension, seats, stereo). Then a few years ago one of my brothers crashed it into the back of the garage
and racked the frame. I was very upset at first but it did give me the perfect excuse to rebuild with a chevy V8.
Today it has the following:
- '65 body (original)
- '63/'?? frame (yes, the one I bought off eBay was actually two kluged together)
- '65 rear axle (original)
- '72 front axle
- '76 front disc brakes
- '80s steering column, box, and swing pedals
- '75 Chevy 350, HEI, Holley 650
- '80s GM SM465 4spd tranny
- '65 Dana 18 transfercase (original, rebuilt by yours truly)
- '80s Ford pickup master cylinder
- '60s rear mount gas tank (I think from a postal jeep)
- '70s Mustang gas filler neck
- '80s CJ7 front grille (this helped with fitting the V8 radiator)
As you can see this is also a real Frankenstein. And, yes, it got the bad brain. It's the most dangerous thing ever. Oh well, at least
it's fun. I had the driveshafts custom modified at a place called Fleetpride in Hartford. This was much, much cheaper than having those guys
who advertise in the offroad magazines do it. The hydraulic clutch came from PartsMike,
who was incredibly helpful. That rear mount gas tank is not stock. I made the mistake of getting the one with the 2" filler and the filler
necks for these DO NOT EXIST. Go with a later model one so you don't have do a custom setup with '70s Mustang parts like me. More pics to
come.
Update: 01/14/2005
Yesterday when I was driving to work to rear driver side wheel fell off. It
was the last turn as I was coming in to work at a very low speed. There was
really no damage but the way the it just plain fell off is kind of
suspicious. It's back together now, but here are some pics. That's Jim using
his farm jack to lift the jeep and you can see some damage the studs and drum
did to the inside of the wheel.
